Multiple Termination of Employment During the Pandemic Is Bad for Business- Mrs Dzifa Vanderpuye Advises

An Associate at Bentsi-Enchill, Letsa and Ankomah, Mrs Dzifa Vanderpuye, has advised employers to refrain from multiple termination of appointments in times of uncertainties. 

Speaking on the panel of the Graphic Talks 360, a Graphic Business series on the topic, “Rescuing employment contracts in times of disruption”, she said multiple termination of appointments was not a sustainable way of managing a business.

‘’Terminating ten to twenty employees at a time due to redundancy is not viable for businesses’’, she stated. She further explained that laying off employees during the pandemic period should be done in agreement with the employees. 

Rather, she said that at the beginning of an employment, there should be a term in the contract that says salaries may be reduced in times of redundancy.

The event which was organized by the Graphic Business to discuss the issues surrounding employers and employee’s business contract, agreements and terms. The invited guests which includes Dr Jeff Bassey and Mrs Dzifa Vanderpuye, extensively talked about human resource and employee engagements in the one-hour interactive session which was moderated by the Assistant Graphic Business editor, Mr Benoni Okine.

For instance, speaking on contract terms in times of uncertainty, Mrs Vanderpuye further said, ‘’At the beginning of the employment, there should be a term in the contract that says salaries may be reduced in times redundancy.’’

Other business-related matters which were discussed include, labor act and labor law, force majeure, work ethics, remote work, and tackling leave days during the pandemic.
